A Battery Electric Bus Engineer will be responsible for development of various systems of the battery electric transit bus. The engineer will work closely with suppliers and other team members to design and develop these systems. The candidate will be self-directed and exhibit outstanding creativity, superior initiative, judgement and leadership. This is a hands-on position.


  • Design of electrical vehicle high and low voltage architectures, harnesses and schematics
  • Design of various electric vehicle electrified accessory systems
  • Continuous research and execution of drive systems, battery technologies, charging systems, electrified accessories and green technology
  • Creates new product designs that exceed customer expectations
  • Performs complex troubleshooting with on-site production team or remote troubleshooting of buses with field service team
  • Supports Field Service department with writing procedures for maintenance and system operation, and designing for field retrofit
  • Documents new designs and design modifications with appropriate drawings, BOM requests, project release paperwork, etc.
  • Works closely with purchasing to ensure designs are released within lead times for parts procurement to meet bus production schedule
  • Works closely with production control to release major projects into the manufacturing process
  • Validates new designs and tests systems
  • Supports purchasing department with sourcing suggestions, alternative manufacturing methods, part substitution evaluations, vendor evaluations, etc.
  • Supports  Sales department by investigating new designs in response to customer requests, help with bid research, technical support for customer visits, etc.
  • Supports  Parts department with designs for retrofits/upfits of product already in the field, sourcing suggestions, part history and substitution research, etc. 
  • Maintains current knowledge of system offerings and emerging design technologies in the energy storage and charging, transit and heavy duty vehicle industry


  • Interacts extensively with manufacturing to maintain familiarity with manufacturing operations and staff
  • Supports all designs throughout the production process
  • Ability to work quickly, efficiently, and effectively within a compressed manufacturing time schedule to troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise in the production process

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering plus a minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience in the automotive segment, preferably within hybrid and/or electric vehicles
  • Experience with high voltage DC systems, including high voltage interlock loops, isolation, shielding and others
  • Experience with high voltage, high capacity energy storage systems, including battery management systems and thermal management systems
  • Experience with high voltage traction motor systems, including controls and theory of operation
  • Experience with electrified accessories
  • Experience with electric vehicle charging standards, including J1772, DC fast charging and CCS
  • systems
  • Experience with high voltage electrical safety and work standards, OSHA
  • J1939/CAN tools (CANalyzer, P-CAN, CANoe, etc.) and standards
  • Problem resolution processes such 8D, 5P etc
  • FMEAs to identify and prevent potential failure modes in designs
  • Self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work within diverse teams
  • Experienced in systems engineering approaches to solving problems
  • Capable of creative/innovative design solutions
  • Draws concise logical conclusions based on data from experiments/testing
  • Exhibits vision and foresight in testing to the extremes of a design and guides team members through well thought out test process
  • Familiar with data driven design

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Diagnostic and programming tools from the transit and heavy duty vehicle industries (Cummins Insite, Allison Doc, Wabco Toolbox, VEPS, etc.)
  • Vehicle, Diagnostic Control System Design & Development
  • Sensors and data acquisition systems
  • Able to execute Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly activities
  • Experience with the following: vehicle electrical system troubleshooting, electrical test equipment/tools, automotive industry codes/standards such as SAE, NEC, NFPA, FMVSS, DOT, NHTSA, harness/schematic design and drawing tools to perform load analysis, power distribution and circuit protection analysis, and charging systems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate the ability to express technical concepts clearly and concisely
  • Capable of finding, collecting and organizing data for easy presentation
  • Demonstrated flexibility when managing through competing projects and priorities
