Our client is a well established manufacturer of heavy commercial vehicles-They have been in business for over 125 years, and have recently moved into a large new facility as a result of major expansion-They have an immediate need for an Engineering Supervisor with a strong background in vehicle interiors.

The Design Engineering Supervisor is a key member of the design engineering leadership team. He/she provides technical and organizational leadership to a team of design engineers, CAD designers, BOM and production support staff for The Driver's Interior (CoE)

This position is responsible for communication to and ongoing management and prioritization of CoE workload and resource planning to ensure program targets are met while improving design quality.   

Job Responsibilities/Essential Duties/Competencies 

  • Responsible for continuous improvement of team’s performance through active coaching, training, mentoring, performance reviews, and development planning
  • Responsible for reviewing CAD models and drawings of components, subsystems, and systems to ensure they have integrity, are accurate and complete, and support production cost estimation and prototype quotes
  • Support production ramp up & ongoing/continuous product/process improvement
  • Work with internal and external business partners to drive key technology insights and to derive implications for vehicle development projects
  • Lead root cause analysis on shortages, field service, or quality issues within the CoE
  • Lead FMEAs and provide feedback for the development of DVP&R or necessary test plans.
  • Guide, supervise and lead complex development and failure analysis processes for different mechanical/electrical systems
  • Act as the project technical leader to gather and understand all related information for technical advancement by identifying opportunities and driving improvements in subsystem and system within areas of expertise
  • Advise stakeholders on the technical issues that affect the product design, production cycle-time & cost
  • Organize design reviews with all applicable departments as well as project review with the management team to make sure product development completed on time
  • Responsible for development and improvement of standardized processes within CoEs
  • Ensure released designs are cost-effective, manufacturable, serviceable, meet all performance objectives, safety and regulatory requirements, customer requirements and are documented properly
  • Interpret customer product requirements, and map requirements onto existing designs when possible, and/or develop new designs when needed
  • Documentation of final design upon the successful development of component and simple subsystem, which includes releasing the final technical specification, related design calculation, and the design manual or guideline
  • Provide technical design support to sales, product engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, field services, and quality organizations
  • Create and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM) along with all project documentation
  • Coordinate and manage the execution of prototype builds, testing, review, prototype order and procurement for system level characterization
  • Apply lean principles in designs and processes
  • Assist in Engr and HR activities as required (Hiring, Vacation approvals, etc.)
  • Definition of product structure
  • Defining scope of work for his/her team
  • Participate and influence change control process


The CoE will be responsible for the following but not limited to:

  • Passenger seats, Seat layouts, seat mounting, w/c restraints, sub floor, floor layouts, etc.
  • Stanchions, grab handles, modesty panels, package racks
  • Stowage, interior wheel well covering, floor covering (Altro/RCA), etc.
  • Interior trim, nosing, finishing
  • Ad frames, card holders, 
  • Decals: Emergency exit decals, window operation decals, ADA decals, message decals, etc.)
  • Melamine, ceiling panels, Insulation
  • USB/ power outlets, Interior lights, Lamp kits/ Overhead luggage racks
  • destination signs, destination sign mounting
  • HVAC (Drivers heater, passenger floor heater, main unit, etc.

  • Detailed knowledge and application of industry practices and standards (NFPA, NEC, APTA, etc.)
  • Understanding and application of structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for components and weldments
  • Understanding and application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Understanding of automotive mechanical systems and functions and ability to read and produce mechanical drawings
  • Understanding of typical manufacturing tolerances associated with sheet metal and machined parts
  • Application of sound electrical design fundamentals 
  • Working knowledge in electrical power distribution including AC and DC systems
  • In-depth knowledge of the electrical load calculation and circuit protection
  • Experience with high voltage systems designs and necessary safety guidelines
  •  Experience with low voltage harness design
  • Experience in generating harness and electrical schematic using CAD software
  • Familiarity with automotive components such as circuit breakers, relays, wiring... etc.
  • Familiarity with automotive industry standards such as SAE, NFPA, FMVSS, etc.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and environment
  • Ability to diagnose and trouble shoot automotive electrical systems
